ergeTo facilitate is "to make easy or easier." One who facilitates is one who makes it easy for others to interact, discuss things and generally do what they have to do. This applies to simple everyday situations like when someone says in a meeting ‘why don’t we do this?’ as a way of encouraging others to share their views and opinions, and in a more profound way when someone engages a team or group in a planning process which requires everyone to feel involved in idea forming, evaluative discussion and decision making for action. A facilitator thinks through procedures and ways of doing that enable a group to gather and share cumulative insights, to order them, and then to decide on a course of action that has consensus and commitment backing it. There are of course many more meanings of what being a facilitator means; some of ways of thinking, speaking and acting are generic to lots of situations whereas others are specific to particular contexts. This page is dedicated to accumulating examples of facilitators in action and to building information resources about facilitation. Please add your own examples and resources.
